Syriana

If Charlie and the Chocolate Factory or The Wedding Crashers were the "feel-good" movies of the summer, then Syriana is the "feel-like-shit" movie of the winter. While many ethnocentric jingoists might blatantly miss the point of the movie, it is obvious that there will be no winners in the war for oil, and more importantly, that our fuel-hungry social practices are creating irrevocable consequences. Contrary to what it might sound like, the movie is worth the gut-wrenching feeling one gets from realizing this depressing point. It is my hope that more Hummer-driving supporters of the Texas Oil Tycoons will recognize the shady backdoor practices of an imperialistic government bent on getting their hands on a dying resource, and speak up where so many others are remaining silent in ignorance or indifference. Moriarty of aintitcool.com describes the film as "pulverizing" and goes on to say that the "writer/director Steven Gaghan has created a searing look at the way corruption makes the world go round, and the most unsettling thing is just how close to truth you suspect it is." I whole-heartedly recommend this film.

Syriana is also getting media attention due to some environmentalists using the movie to help make their points:
