The Robot Ate Me

Ever since I saw The Robot Ate Me at Mac's Bar in East Lansing a few months ago (Rylan solo to boot!), I haven't been able to get enough of them. Their infectious melodies soothe the ears while simultaneously critiquing the socio/religio-political atmosphere affecting all of us liberals today. With lyrics like "I kill better when I drink Pepsi...", "Why don't you join the Republican Army? I need a break from you and this world...", and my favorite: "Sometimes we play crispy Christian tea time with Barbies, tea, and toast. And my friend brings this talking version of God and a full Buddhist Lego set. Did you know that my grandmother bought me a full Jesus action figure set? ... And when we play crispy Christian tea time, I like to be the President. And if you don't like my games, you should definitely just run away, because otherwise you'll burn in flames. It's my world even if I'm insane...", you can't help but think The Robot Ate Me is voicing so many of our angry anti-Bush sentiments. If more musicians could tap into a fraction of what inspires The Robot Ate Me, they'd find themselves contributing to the voice of a generation of rebels rather than fueling it. It's bands like them that make it worth checking out local shows - every now and then you find a gem. I did exactly that when I discovered The Robot Ate Me.

Here are a few songs to download directly from their website; have a listen:
"Bad Feelings" from the album Carousel Waltz (2005)
"The Genocide Ball" from the album On Vacation: Part 1 (2004)
"On Vacation" from the album On Vacation: Part 2 (2004)
"Our Bones Were Chalk" from the album They Ate Themselves (2002)
"They Ate Themselves" from the album They Ate Themselves (2002)
"Everyone Was Still" from the album They Ate Themselves (2002)
"A Hole in the Plane" (Unreleased)
