10 reasons the U.S. is no longer the land of the free

After protesting SOPA and PIPA for 24 hours, it makes sense to outline which freedoms of ours have already been taken away.

From The Washington Post: "In the decade since Sept. 11, 2001, this country has comprehensively reduced civil liberties in the name of an expanded security state. The most recent example of this was the National Defense Authorization Act, signed Dec. 31, which allows for the indefinite detention of citizens. At what point does the reduction of individual rights in our country change how we define ourselves?"

London Riots - Part 1

Riots erupted in the North London area of Tottenham last night, ostensibly over the recent shooting of 29-year-old Mark Duggan by the Metropolitan Police near Tottenham Hale station.

Duggan was reportedly a target of an ongoing police investigation into gun crime in London’s black communities, and was shot after allegedly firing on a Specialist Firearms Command officer with an illegal handgun.

A protest march organized by family and friends of Duggan turned violent after a rumor that police officers assaulted a teenage girl caused longstanding tensions to boil over. Many shops were looted and vehicles were set on fire, including two police cars and a double-decker bus. Several buildings sustained heavy damage after being petrol bombed by the rioters.

Duggan’s family said they did not condone the actions of the rioters and his brother asked that they refrain from “mak[ing] this about my brother’s life.”

When all was said and done, 55 people had been arrested, 29 were injured (26 officers and 3 others) and the London Fire Brigade had put out a total of 49 fires. All injured persons have since been released from hospital; the arrested remain in custody under various charges.

The Met has launched an investigation into the riot, and are asking anyone with information on those involved to get in touch. Police are also warning locals against “ill-informed speculation” posted on social networking sitesconcerning nascent riot activity taking place tonight in other parts of London. Additional rioting was reported in Wood Green and Enfield Town, where youths reportedly smashed store windows and attacked a police car.

Egyptian general admits 'virginity checks' conducted on protesters

From CNN: "The allegations arose in an Amnesty International report, published weeks after the March 9 protest. It claimed female demonstrators were beaten, given electric shocks, strip-searched, threatened with prostitution charges and forced to submit to virginity checks."

Saudi Woman Arrested for Protesting Female Driving Ban

From The Daily What.: A concerted effort appears to be underway to keep footage of a Saudi woman driving through the streets of Khobar off the web.

Manal al-Sharif was arrested Sunday after she posted a video of herself driving while encouraging other women to flout the Saudi ban on female drivers. Sharif and other like-minded women were organizing a June 17 “drive-in” protest when she was arrested; the Facebook page for the event was deleted despite amassing over 12,000 likes, and a fake Twitter account appearing to belong to Sharif claimed the campaign was off.

Saudi blogger Eman Al Nafjan, who discovered the fake account, wrote: “Someone pretending to be her tweeted that she has repented once she realized that the call to lift the ban is an Iranian and atheist conspiracy that will lead society to moral decadence.”

Nafjan and other Saudi bloggers have been working round the clock to counter the government’s maneuvers, reviving the protest’s Facebook page, reuping the deleted YouTube video (above), and reposting the rules for participating in the June 17 movement.

Wajiha Howeidar, who was operating the camera during Sharif’s joy ride, told France 24: “I’m under the impression that this mobilization has somewhat changed mentalities inside the country, but I also see that authorities haven’t budged an inch. Our leaders are like many others in the Arab world: they don’t take their people’s opinions and aspirations into account.”
